I presented our paper on
Multicast Audio - The Next Generation
at the INET'97 conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
This paper is a forward-looking discussion of how multicast audio
conferencing tools might evolve. It reviews recent technical
developments in second-generation multicast audio tools (packet loss
protection and repair, improved scheduling and cross media
synchronisation) and the resulting improvements in terms of performance
and usability, and outlines a number of technical solutions (improved
redundancy and repair, higher-quality audio, heterogeneous distribution
and improved acoustic effects) that should be incorporated into the
next generation of multicast audio tools to further improve quality.
